With head in the clouds during English lessons

 

Do you sometimes catch your students daydreaming during the lesson? Or do you catch yourself daydreaming about students always behaving well and understanding everything you say to the them? Why not try to stop walking with the head in the clouds but actually use the clouds to encourage your students to learn and participate actively in the lesson?

In this session I will present a set of activities using clouds to learn vocabulary, practise grammar and develop different skills. You will get to know tested ideas for simple yet engaging lessons, which will appeal to students’ liking. Not only you as the teacher but also your pupils will be responsible for creating the tasks. This as well as personalization of the activities will increase the engagement even more.

The Lesson-Changing Magic of Tidying up, or Technology that Sparks Joy in the Classroom

 

What happens when you read a right book at just the right moment in your life? In my case you are driven into the frenzy of tidying up! And when everything around me was decluttered and discarded, and what was left moved to a new apartment and safely stored in the right places it was time to clean up my computer. In my Konmari-method-inspired session  I will share with you tips and tricks of putting well-known and lesser-known websites, applications and online tools into a new sensible classroom use. Repurposed, recycled, neatly organized and categorized they have been given a new lease of life in my favorites and the classroom – sparking joy, engagement and learning – of both the students and the teacher.

Pierwiastki w głowie nastolatka, czyli co steruje pamięcią i koncentracją ucznia

 

Mimo dostępności tak wielu źródeł wspomagających uczenie się młodzież pozostaje bezradna w obliczu własnej niewiedzy na temat czynników wpływających na ich procesy myślowe. Nauczyciele oraz rodzice również nie znają przyczyny ospałości, braku koncentracji i zapominania. Jak słusznie i sprawiedliwie ocenić stan nastolatka, skoro każdy z nich w innym tempie dojrzewa, inaczej pracuje system przewodnictwa nerwowego oraz inne jest zapotrzebowanie mózgu na pierwiastki niezbędne do prawidłowego funkcjonowania? Zrozumienie podstawowych zasad zależności pomiędzy poziomem pierwiastków oraz zasad ich uwalniania jest pierwszym krokiem do spojrzenia z innej strony na proces przetwarzania informacji. Gdzie znajdziemy podstawowe pierwiastki, co następuje po ich podaży? Jakie produkty są niezastąpione w diecie uczących się, jak sen (i jego brak) wpływa na ucznia i (nauczyciela)? Co to jest BDNF i czy faktycznie  stymuluje produkcje nowych komórek nerwowych w hipokampie? Skąd go wziąć? Odpowiedzi na te pytania z pewnością pomogą zrozumieć trudne relacje uczeń – nauczyciel i wspomóc obie strony. Lekcja jest doskonałym momentem, aby zdiagnozować rutynę dnia, nawyki żywieniowe i sposoby spędzania wolnego czasu. I podać uczniom niezbędne pierwiastki.

The unknown. The mysterious. The eerie.

We all like the supernatural, and our teen students are no exception – so why not enjoy some classes on mysteries, creepy pastas, urban legends and conspiracy theories?

I will share with you my favourite lesson ideas. Zombies will make your students remember Present Perfect forever, Dyatlov Pass Incident will make them debate in English, they will visit Area 51 and describe all the classified wonders, write a story a’la Edgar Allan Poe and even make their own graphic novel.

All of the ideas are easy to use and require minimum preparation from a teacher. Your students will use the language in a most natural way which is storytelling. After all, we all love a good tale, don’t we?

Students love games. It is natural then that teachers want to include games in their classes, sometimes even making them the core of a lesson. However, we should always focus on their educational aim first, notwithstanding having fun altogether.

Eat your veggies! How to make vocabulary revision more appetizing

 

I once asked my teenage students to list things they know they should do but they don’t. One student replied: “My mom always forces me to eat more vegetables, but they’re so bland and boring.” Somebody else said that they knew they had to learn and revise more, but found it boring, too. Being both a parent and a teacher, I started thinking about how to make our teenagers more interested and engaged in learning. Thus, in my session, I’m going to present some of my tried-and-tested ideas for making vocabulary revision more appetizing.

Wyzwania dorastania – dlaczego tak trudno być (z) nastolatkiem

 

Okres dojrzewania to czas dokonywania się ogromnych zmian w młodym człowieku, zmian, które odbywają się na wielu poziomach jednocześnie . Dokonują się zmiany w fizyczności, fizjologii i chemii organizmu, układzie nerwowym, w emocjach, a to wszystko wpływa na kształtowanie się nowych postaw i relacji społecznych, tożsamości,  światopoglądu… Skok w dorosłość, wejście w nieznane, wymaga zmierzenia się z zupełnie nowymi wyzwaniami i z zupełnie nowym sobą. Jest źródłem sukcesów i coraz większej autonomii, ale przynosi też rozczarowania i porażki. To wszystko musi udźwignąć ktoś, kto nadal balansuje na granicy między byciem dorosłym, a byciem dzieckiem…. I często ten wybór jest szalenie trudny. Próba zaciekawienia się i zrozumienia z czym mierzą się nastolatki pozwala na dostrzeżenie większego sensu w ich reakcjach, czy zachowaniach.  Daje nam również szansę na reagowanie z większym spokojem i udzielenie im wsparcia, kiedy tego potrzebują. Zapraszam do wspólnej podróży w zawikłany świat dojrzewania.
